Speaker Nancy Pelosi is deflecting from growing concerns about her prior knowledge of the planning of the capitol attack by doing what she does best: Going on the offensive.
Pelosi is now proposing a “9/11 style commission” to purportedly get to the bottom of what really happened on January 6th.
“It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened,” Pelosi said in a letter to House colleagues.
“To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to ‘investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex… and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region.’”
One senate Republican agreed with Pelosi: Censured Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. He was one of seven Republicans who had sided with Democrats in their bid to get a Trump impeachment conviction.
“There should be a complete investigation about what happened,” said Cassidy. “What was known, who knew it and when they knew, all that, because that builds the basis so this never happens again.”
Senator Lindsey Graham had earlier called for a “9/11 commission” to investigate the origins of the capitol riots.
“His behavior after the election was over the top,” Graham claimed. “We need a 9/11 commission to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again.”
“Investigations into the riot were already planned, with Senate hearings scheduled later this month in the Senate Rules Committee,” CNBC reported. Pelosi had asked retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré to “lead an immediate review of the Capitol’s security process.”
The proposal of the 9/11-style commission comes in the aftermath of a letter from the House GOP pressing her on what she knew about the security breakdowns prior to the capitol siege, including the House’s denial of security after multiple requests from the now-resigned Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund.
Pelosi had exploded on “cowardly senators” who did not vote to convict Donald Trump at his impeachment trial. She is obviously unwilling to let it go.
