On Sunday, Americans learned that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas had been hospitalized with a ‘flu-like infection.’
“Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms,” the high court’s statement read.
“He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics,” the statement continued. “His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expected to be released from the hospital in a day or two.”
“Justice Thomas will participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts, and audio of the oral arguments,” the statement added.
But while the storied Supreme Court Justice was resting up in the hospital while missing oral arguments for days (he was released on Friday), the news media unleashed a vicious and coordinated smear campaign against his wife Ginni Thomas.
“Virginia Thomas, a conservative activist married to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, repeatedly pressed White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in urgent text exchanges in the critical weeks following the vote, according to copies of the messages obtained by CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa and Bob Woodward of The Washington Post.”
“Those messages — part of 29 total messages obtained — reveal an extraordinary pipeline between Virginia Thomas, who goes by Ginni, and then-President Donald Trump’s top aide during a period when Trump and his allies were vowing to go to the Supreme Court in an effort to subvert the election results,” CBS claimed.
“The messages, which do not directly reference Justice Thomas or the Supreme Court, show for the first time how Ginni Thomas used her access to Trump’s inner circle to encourage and seek to guide the president’s strategy to overturn the election results — and how receptive and grateful Meadows said he was to receive her advice,” the story notes.
This “smear campaign” rests upon three matters of dubious ethical foundation. The first is that Mrs. Thomas’s texts are privileged and confidential information that should never be leaked to the media under a legitimate Congressional investigation.
“The messages were among the 2,320 text messages that Meadows provided the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol,” the CBS report notes on the Washington Post story. “The existence of messages between Thomas and Meadows — 21 sent by her; eight by him — have not previously been reported and were reviewed by CBS News and The Post. They were then confirmed by five people who have seen the committee’s documents.”
The second matter is that Mrs. Thomas has the right to her professional occupation regardless of who her husband is. If the radical agitators behind the political attack had any concern about such ostensible, but unsubstantiated, conflicts of interest, power couples would be a thing of the past. Those ramifications alone would be a political earthquake that would undoubtedly send shudders throughout the Swamp.
Furthermore, the texts in question do not mention Clarence Thomas by name; they do not imply any impropriety that she was using her husband’s position for influence; there is no judicial decision rendered by Justice Thomas that brings up any inconsistency in his judicial philosophy, nor his conservative track record of originalist decision-making. There is no “there, there.”
This has not stopped the wild-eyed charlatans from foaming at the mouth over the texts, which has resurrected their always barely dormant demands that Clarence Thomas resign, be impeached, or simply die.
“But from a purely political point of view, Democrats should be loudly drawing attention to the fact that the wife of a sitting Supreme Court justice supported Trump’s coup attempt,” MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan charged. “That justice then refused to recuse himself from a case involving the investigation of that coup attempt. There is a clear value in holding impeachment hearings to draw attention to Thomas and his wife and their inappropriate behavior, especially as an increasingly partisan, conservative-majority court guts voting and reproductive rights.”
If you had trouble following this utilitarian argument, Clarence Thomas should allegedly be removed from the nation’s highest court over his wife’s non-coup attempt. Also, because of ‘voting’ and ‘reproductive’ rights (this is absurd left-wing doublespeak for the Democrats’ federal elections takeover bills and abortion-on-demand).
Ginni Thomas has her rights under the First Amendment, all caterwauling and innuendo to the contrary be damned. The reality defying insistence that former President Donald Trump’s contesting of the 2020 election results amounted to a ‘coup attempt’ by his inner circle is among the most hyperbolic claptrap to have ever emanated from the radical left’s accomplished pablum-spewers.
For if the Republican Party is guilty of “subverting” the election by seeking to “overturn” the results by using the constitutional process of election challenges, then the Democratic Party itself is guilty of such ‘perfidious treason’ by the very same made-up standards: In 2001, in 2005, and in 2017.
That is correct. Donald Trump would be a victim of the same ‘coup attempt’ that the Democrats are groundlessly accusing him of committing. If we are to take their accusations seriously. (We shouldn’t.)
If politicians’ strident rhetoric is suddenly ‘incitement,’ if their speech happens only to presage a riot, then it would not just be Trump’s legal standing on the line. The Democrats would be guilty of provoking the incendiary medieval rampage through America’s biggest cities in 2020 courtesy of the Dems’ pillaging-and-burning allies in the Black Lives Matter and socialist Antifa movements.
Such accusations that anyone coordinating with a Trump official to manage the unfolding events of January 6 is guilty of some ‘insidious plot’ is a juvenile pretense that presupposes Americans will confuse commonplace political and media coordination with high treason. Indeed, this has been the warped pretense that has accompanied such leaks before, which amount to an attack on freedom of the press — the texts from Sean Hannity, my former boss, comes to mind.
But the most egregious and ugly aspect of this tripartite smear on Clarence Thomas’s wife is the undoubtedly nasty timing. Thomas, one of the oldest members of the court at 73 years old, was in a vulnerable position healthwise. The Democrats have wished ill upon Thomas for remaining faithful to his constitutional principles and for proving to be a nemesis to the judicial activists bent on warping the courts to carry out their activist agenda.
Clarence Thomas has disappointed them, once again, however. He has emerged from the hospital on Friday to renew his fight against those seeking to corrupt the highest court.
A true warrior knows there is no rest from the wicked until finding ultimate salvation in the arms of the Lord.
