L.A. Charter School Segregates Unvaccinated Children Behind Barriers, Threatens Them with Suspension

Written by Kyle Becker

A Los Angeles public charter school is being called out by a civic organization for ‘segregating’ unvaccinated children behind barriers.

Let Them Breathe, an activist group that monitors Covid response policies, showed video of the callous practice, and interviewed witnesses near the school.

“Unvax students at New West Charter LA segregated behind barriers & not allowed to attend class,’ Let Them Breathe reported. “They asked for chairs, were denied & are sitting on the pavement, not allowed to even use restroom. LAPD is on site but not intervening. Litigation from Let Them Choose already pending.”

The executive director Sharon Weir, in an update, threatened the children with suspension over the purported “disruption” they were causing. She instructed the children and parents to leave the campus immediately.

“New West Charter is now threatening to suspend peaceful unvax students who are in parking lot for ‘disrupting school activities’ even though LAUSD suspended mandate and we beat SDUSD mandate,” the group said. “Let Them Choose has litigation pending against New West mandate.”

The L.A. police department appeared unconcerned with the children’s rights being violated.

“Do not cross this line,” the officer in the video says.

The unvaccinated children had been put behind yellow caution tape outside.

“LAUSD suspended their unlawful vax mandate but this is how New West charter is treating unvax students, segregating them behind caution tape in the parking lot & denying them education,” the group said. “Let Them Choose already has litigation pending & we will strike down this mandate like SDUSD.”

The group interviewed students who were being held outside against their will who vouched for the accuracy of the report.

“We are being segregated from the rest of the school,” a girl named Ann said.

New West Charter School describes itself as a “free, independent, high-performing, public charter school,” that is chartered by the State Board of Education and supervised by the Charter Schools Division of the California Department of Education. The school has two campuses for grades 6 – 12, including a hybrid high school (part online/part in-class curriculum) for grades 9 – 12.

Becker News reached out to New West Charter School for comment on the report, and has not heard back at the time of publication. The report will be updated with comment as forthcoming.

Let Them Breathe (LTB) states that it has “litigation pending” already over the episode. It has filed lawsuits in the past on First Amendment grounds against the state’s school mask mandate.

“The science showing masking is ineffective, unnecessary & harmful to students’ mental, social, physical and academic well being is documented in our pending litigation against @CAPublicHealth K-12 mask mandate,” LTB tweeted in late December.

In its lawsuit, Let Them Breathe describes itself as an “advocacy organization and an incorporated entity based in the state of California, consisting of over 20,000 individuals who reside throughout the state and nation. Members of LTB include parents of California schoolchildren of all ages in grades TK–12 and English language learners.”

“LTB was founded by parents in response to California’s K–12 student mask mandates,” the group continued. “Its goal is to advocate for mask-choice for all students regardless of vaccination status. LTB believes that masking students is unnecessary, ineffective, and harmful to their mental, physical, social, and emotional well-being. LTB is concerned that mask requirements prevent children from engaging in a quality in-person education.”

The Covid survival rate for healthy children is estimated to be 99.99995%, based on CDC figures (the infection survival rate is at least 99.995%). Covid-related deaths are reported to be one percent of annual deaths for those under age 18. Children are not at significant statistical risk from Covid-19.

The Wall Street Journal recently published a study that shows Covid transmission is only insignificantly impaired by masks worn by the general public.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a Pfizer board member and former FDA Chief, recently admitted that cloth masks don’t work.

“Cloth masks aren’t going to provide a lot of protection, that’s the bottom line,” he said. “This is an airborne illness. We now understand that. And a cloth mask is not going to protect you from a virus that spreads through airborne transmission. It could protect better through droplet transmission, something like the flu, but not this coronavirus.”

Schools in blue states are nonetheless continuing to enforce school mask mandates and are treating unvaccinated children as if they are a danger to themselves and others.

It is time to put an end to these schools’ cruel and scientifically illiterate policies.
