The Texas Senate recently passed a slate of election integrity measures to ensure that the state’s elections are free, fair and accountable. The legislation included provisions to purge the voter rolls of non-citizens and non-residents, as well as the implementation of among the most secure voter IDs in the nation.
The Democratic Party wanted no part of such election legislation, as the state House representatives showed in revealing fashion on Monday.
“Texas Democrats pulled off a dramatic, last-ditch walkout in the state House of Representatives on Sunday night to block passage of one of the most restrictive voting bills in the U.S., leaving Republicans with no choice but to abandon a midnight deadline and declare the legislative session essentially over,” Fox 13 reported.
“The revolt is one of Democrats’ biggest protests to date against GOP efforts nationwide to impose stricter election laws, and they used the spotlight to urge President Joe Biden to act on voting rights,” the report continued.
While the news media is celebrating the Democrats’ reckless and defiant behavior, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a statement that implies that election measures will be taken up in a ‘special session.’
“I declared Election Integrity and Bail Reform to be must-pass emergency items for this legislative session,” Abbott said. “It is deeply disappointing and concerning for Texans that neither will reach my desk. Ensuring the integrity of our elections and reforming a broken bail system remain emergencies in Texas. They will be added to the special session agenda. Legislators will be expected to have worked out the details when they arrive at the Capitol for the special session.”
The Texas legislation in no way, shape or form curbs any U.S. citizen’s “voting rights.” Every qualified adult would be free to cast one vote in a state’s election. That has not stopped the U.S. media from engaging in a massive disinformation campaign that such legislation as Texas’s and Georgia’s are “restrictive.” They are “restrictive” because they restrict illegal voting, which apparently has provoked the ire of the Democratic Party and its media allies.
Election integrity was destined to become a political battleground after the controversial 2020 elections. President Biden has called any attempt to implement voter IDs an “atrocity” and “un-American.” However, the latest research shows that voter IDs do not impede registration or voting in any way whatsoever; an estimated 95%-96% of all African-Americans already possess a suitable form of ID or can be provided IDs for free by various states.
A major study conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research based on ten-years of voting data in the United States from 2008-2018 found that voter ID laws “have no negative effect on registration or turnout, overall or for any group defined by race, gender, age, or party affiliation.” The study was conducted by Enrico Cantoni at the University of Bologna and Vincent Pons at Harvard Business School and was published in February 2019.
This international study has been supported by additional research on the issue. “This latest [NBER] study echoes the conclusion of others, including a landmark report by The Heritage Foundation in 2007 finding that voter ID laws don’t reduce voter turnout, including among African-Americans and Hispanics,” the Heritage Foundation noted. “These voters were just as likely to vote in states requiring photo identification as in those that don’t.” Even left-leaning Vox News conceded that voter ID laws don’t reduce voter turnout.
That the Democratic Party would go to such extreme lengths to block election integrity legislation only underscores that it has malicious intent. Political activists of all viewpoints should redouble their efforts to ensure that the non-controversial election measures, which are commonplace around the world, are implemented regardless of the theatrics of one of the main political parties.
